Google Minesweeper
Trick
Minesweeper is one of the few puzzle games that Google lets you play without leaving the results page, which is why it belongs on our hidden Google games list. This guide covers how to launch it, what the three levels mean, and a few habits that make boards easier to clear.
Quick answer: Search for minesweeper on Google, press Play, pick a difficulty and clear the board. Left-click reveals a tile and right-click plants a flag.
How to launch it
- Open Google in any modern browser. Chrome, Safari and Firefox all work.
- Search for minesweeper. The playable game appears at the top of the results.
- Press Play. The board opens inside the search page.
- Choose a difficulty. Use the dropdown near the top left of the game.
The three difficulty levels
| Level | Board | Mines |
|---|---|---|
| Easy | 9 ร 9 | 10 |
| Medium | 16 ร 16 | 40 |
| Hard | 30 ร 16 | 99 |
The goal is to reveal every safe tile without clicking a mine. Each number tells you how many of the eight surrounding tiles hide a mine, and your right-click flags mark the tiles you are sure about. This matches the classic Windows game, so the same habits carry over. For a wider view of where it fits among other search games, see our complete list of Google Easter eggs.
Habits that clear boards faster
- Treat the first click as a guess. It only exists to give you numbers to reason from.
- Start with the obvious. A 1 touching a single hidden tile means that tile is a mine, so flag it.
- Use flags to clear around numbers. Once a number has all its mines flagged, the remaining neighbours are safe.
- Play on a bigger screen. Hard is easier to read on a desktop than on a phone.
- Move on from deadlocks. If two moves look equally risky, work elsewhere on the board first and come back.
