AI Tool to Write an About Us Page for a Small Business
(5 Questions)
Look at the "About Us" page of a few small shops and you will see the same line: "We are a passionate team dedicated to excellence." It says nothing. A customer clicking About Us wants to know one thing: can I trust these people? You answer that with facts about who you are, why you started and what you do differently. AI can polish the writing, but it cannot invent your story. So begin with five questions.
Answer these five questions first (in plain notes)
- Who are you? Names, place, how many people.
- Why did you start? The real reason, even if it is small.
- What do you do for customers? In one plain sentence.
- What do you do differently? One thing you can prove.
- What should a customer do next? Order, call, visit.
Spend 10 minutes. Write like you are telling a friend. Spelling does not matter.
Before and after
Before (typical AI output with no input):
"At Sunrise Bakes, we are passionate about delivering high-quality baked goods that delight our customers every day."
After (using the five answers):
"I'm Meera. I started Sunrise Bakes in 2022 from my home kitchen in Indore after my daughter couldn't find a cake without egg. We now bake eggless cakes and cookies for birthdays and small events. Everything is made the day before delivery. If you want a cake for next week, send me a message on WhatsApp."
The second one has a name, a reason, a place, a real difference and a next step. Same business, far more trust.
Prompt (copy and paste)
Write an About Us page for my small business in simple, warm English. About 200 words.
Here are my notes:
- Who we are: [..]
- Why we started: [..]
- What we do: [..]
- What we do differently: [..]
- Next step for the customer: [..]
Write in first person ("I" or "we"). Short paragraphs. No "passionate", "dedicated to excellence", or "high-quality".
Do not add facts I did not give. Use [ADD] if something is missing.
Page layout that works
| Block | Content |
|---|---|
| Top line | One sentence of what you do and for whom |
| Your story | 2-3 short paragraphs |
| Proof | A photo of you or your place, a real number, a real review |
| Next step | One button or line |
A real photo of you or your workplace beats any stock picture.
Service business or product business?
The five answers stay the same. The emphasis changes.
| Service business | Product business | |
|---|---|---|
| Main trust question | "Can this person do the job well?" | "Is this thing good and will it arrive?" |
| Lead with | Who does the work, how long, what training | How the product is made and where from |
| Proof to show | Real work, process, a client quote you have permission to use | Photos of the product being made, care details, return rule |
| Next step | Book a call or ask for a quote | Order, or ask a question first |
Here is a second prompt for a service business. The example is fictional.
Write an About Us page for a one-person service business. About 180 words, first person.
Notes: I am [name], a [job] in [town]. I have done this for [years].
Most of my clients are [type]. I do [one thing] differently: [..].
The process is: [step 1, step 2, step 3]. Next step: [call/WhatsApp/form].
Do not add reviews, awards or numbers. Use [ADD] where something is missing.
Example (fictional): "I'm Arjun, an electrician in a small town. I do home repairs and I always give a written price before I start." That is short, but a customer knows who comes to the door.
Trust checklist
Before you publish, tick each one:
- A real name and a real place on the page
- A real photo of a real person or workplace
- A way to contact you that works today
- One thing you do that you can prove
- No claim you could not show a customer
- The same name, phone number and address as everywhere else online
Photo checklist
- You at work, not posing in a suit
- Your workplace or workshop, tidy but real
- Your product being made or used
- One clear face photo for the top
- Natural light, no heavy filter
- Permission from anyone else who appears in the photo
If the AI gives you this, do this
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| It sounds like an advert | Say: "Rewrite as if I am telling a new customer face to face" |
| Too long | Say: "Cut to 150 words. Keep the reason I started" |
| It adds a number or award | Delete it and say: "Use only my notes" |
| It all sounds like "we" but you are alone | Ask for "I" |
When not to use AI for this page: If your story is painful, personal or still changing, write it by hand first. You can ask AI to tidy it after. Do not let it turn a real story into a smooth one that no longer sounds like you.
Questions owners ask
What to leave out
- Awards you did not win
- Numbers you can't back up ("10,000 happy customers")
- Long mission statements
- Anything AI added that sounds nice but is not true
Keep the look consistent
The words on this page should sound like your name, logo and colours. For that, see AI tools for brand identity design and AI slogan and tagline generator tools. If you are still building the site, AI tools for portfolio website generation can get pages up fast, and your FAQ page is the natural next page to write.
Real-world example: My own "why we started" note was simply: "I got tired of seeing local bakeries struggle with confusing, text-heavy menus. I wanted to make their food look as good as it tasted." AI turned those two lines into a warm, 3-sentence story that perfectly captured the mission without any corporate fluff.
