AI Student Debt Calculator
(What You Really Owe)
An AI student debt calculator is really a three-step habit: list every loan, let AI do the adding, then read the answer with your own eyes. Most people only know their total balance. That’s the least useful number. The one that matters is what the debt costs you each month.
Quick note: I’m not a financial advisor or a lawyer, and loan rules change. Treat everything here as a way to understand your numbers, then confirm anything that affects your money on StudentAid.gov or with your servicer.
What is a student debt calculator?
A student debt calculator adds up all your loans and shows four things: total balance, combined monthly payment, your blended interest rate, and how much interest you’ll pay if you only make minimum payments. An AI chatbot can build one from a pasted table in under a minute.
Step 1: Make the loan table
Federal loans appear after you log in to StudentAid.gov. Private loans don’t show up there, so pull a free credit report at AnnualCreditReport.com and look for lenders you forgot about. People miss one all the time.
Loan | Balance | Rate | Minimum payment
A | $6,000 | 4.99% | $63.61
B | $9,000 | 6.52% | $102.28
C | $15,000 | 8.07% | $182.55
These three loans are made up, but the rates are real federal rates from different years. Mixed rates are normal when you borrow over several terms.
Step 2: Ask AI to do the adding
Here is my student loan table. Calculate:
1) total balance, 2) total monthly minimum,
3) weighted average interest rate (weighted by balance),
4) interest each loan costs per month right now,
5) total interest if I only pay minimums on a 10-year term.
Show the formula for each. Do not change my numbers.
Here’s what comes back, and I checked each line by hand:
| Loan | Balance | Rate | Minimum | Interest per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | $6,000 | 4.99% | $63.61 | $24.95 |
| B | $9,000 | 6.52% | $102.28 | $48.90 |
| C | $15,000 | 8.07% | $182.55 | $100.88 |
| Total | $30,000 | 6.99% blended | $348.44 | $174.73 |
Look at loan C. It’s half the balance but about 58% of the monthly interest. A plain “you owe $30,000” hides that completely. Pay the minimums for the full 10 years and the total interest comes to roughly $11,813, so you’d repay about $41,813.
Step 3: Compare the payment with your income
Take a made-up salary of $42,000. That’s about $3,500 a month before tax, so $348.44 is roughly 10% of gross pay. Ask the AI to run this ratio. Many people feel better, or worse, once they see it as a percentage instead of a scary lump.
My gross monthly income is $3,500. Minimum student loan payments are $348.44.
What percentage is that? Show how it changes if my income rises 10% and if it falls 10%.
Two things the total hides
Accrued interest. On unsubsidized federal loans, interest builds up while you’re in school and in grace. When it’s added to the principal (capitalised), you start paying interest on interest. Ask your servicer for the principal and accrued interest as separate numbers, then tell the AI.
Plan status. The monthly minimum isn’t fixed if you’re on an income-driven plan. The new Repayment Assistance Plan sets payments as a share of income, and a chatbot may still describe the old SAVE plan, which a court order ended in March 2026.
What changed in 2026 (US federal loans): a court order ended the SAVE plan on March 10, 2026. A new income-driven plan, the Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP), opened on July 1, 2026. If you borrowed or consolidated on or after that date, RAP and the new Tiered Standard plan are your only two options. Borrowers with only older loans can still use IBR, plus ICR and PAYE until July 2028. Ex-SAVE borrowers got a 90-day notice from their servicer between July and October 2026, so check your deadline now.
When NOT to use AI for this:
• To guess a loan you can’t find. Look it up. An invented balance gives you an invented plan.
• To enter account numbers or login details.
• To skip reading the final table. Check at least one row by hand.
Borrowing in India? Add every loan: bank education loan, any top-up, and family or NBFC credit. Ask each lender for the outstanding principal and any interest that built up during the moratorium, then paste those figures into the same table.

Once you know the total, turn it into a monthly number with the AI student loan repayment calculator. Then see how extra payments change the picture in the AI student loan payoff calculator guide.
