AI Tool to Write an Ebook Outline (Free)
(From Your Own Notes + Prompts)
You want to write a short ebook, maybe a free guide for your email list. You open a blank page and nothing comes. A free AI chatbot can build an ebook outline in a minute. But if you only type a topic, you get a generic outline that any other person could get. This page shows a better way: start with one reader and one promise, feed the AI your own notes, then test the outline before you write a single chapter.
Why a topic gives you a weak outline
"Healthy eating" is a topic. "Help busy nurses cook five quick dinners without a long shopping list" is a promise to one reader. A topic can fill 300 pages. A promise tells you what to put in, and what to leave out.
Free chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini can all do this job. The tool matters less than what you give it. Plan on three steps: a promise, your notes, then the outline.
Step 1: write the one-sentence promise
Fill in this sentence. Say it out loud. If it sounds vague, make it smaller.
This ebook helps [one type of reader]
who is stuck with [one problem]
to [one result they can reach] in [short time or number of steps].
One reader, one problem, one result. If you have two readers, you have two ebooks.
Step 2: dump what you know before you ask the AI
This step is the one most people skip, and it is why their ebooks sound the same as everyone else's. Open a plain note. Set a timer for 15 minutes. Write, without sorting:
- Questions clients ask you again and again.
- Mistakes you see beginners make.
- Your own steps, in the order you really do them.
- Real stories from your work, with names removed.
- Tools, numbers or rules you know are true, because you use them.
Messy is fine. This is your real knowledge, and the AI cannot invent it for you.
Prompt 1: build the outline from your notes
You are helping me outline a short ebook of about [20] pages.
My promise: [paste your one sentence].
Below are my own notes. Use ONLY these notes for facts and examples.
Make an outline with: a short introduction, [6] chapters, and one final next-step page.
For each chapter give: a title, its one job in one sentence, and which of my notes it uses.
If a chapter has no note to support it, mark it NEEDS MY INPUT. Do not invent statistics, quotes or case studies.
My notes:
[paste your knowledge dump]
The "NEEDS MY INPUT" line matters. It shows you the holes in your plan, instead of hiding them behind smooth sentences.
How many pages for each part
These are rough budgets, not rules. A lead magnet is read in one sitting, so shorter is often better.
| Ebook length | Chapters | Pages per chapter | Intro | Next-step page |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 pages | 4 to 5 | 1 to 2 | 1 page | 1 page |
| 20 pages | 5 to 6 | 2 to 3 | 1 to 2 pages | 1 page |
| 30 pages | 6 to 7 | 3 to 4 | 2 pages | 1 to 2 pages |
| 40 pages | 7 to 8 | 4 to 5 | 2 pages | 2 pages |
Each chapter gets one job and one example. The next-step page tells the reader what to do now: book a call, join a class, or reply to your email.
Worked example: a bakery owner's beginner cake ebook (fictional)
A fictional bakery owner, Mina, wants a free ebook for her email list. Her promise: "This ebook helps people who have never baked a cake bake 10 simple cakes at home, with one bowl and no special tools." Her dump has 30 lines, such as "people open the oven door too early" and "most beginners buy too many pans". She asks for a 20-page outline. A shortened result:
| Part | Its one job | Example from Mina's notes |
|---|---|---|
| Intro | Say who it is for and the promise | A customer who said "I burn everything" |
| 1. Three tools only | Stop beginners buying extras | The one pan she suggests first |
| 2. Read a recipe | Explain terms like "fold" | A mistake with cold butter |
| 3. Oven basics | Explain heat and timing | Opening the door too early |
| 4. Your first 5 cakes | Easy recipes, in order | NEEDS MY INPUT: her recipes |
| 5. Your next 5 cakes | Small steps up | NEEDS MY INPUT: her recipes |
| 6. When a cake fails | Simple rescue steps | A sunken cake she fixed |
| Next step | Invite to a baking class | Her Saturday class |
Notice the two NEEDS MY INPUT rows. The AI did not make up recipes. Mina knows those chapters need her own tested recipes, and she adds them herself.
Prompt 2: the two-sentence test and the repeat check
A good outline survives two tests. First, can you say each chapter in two sentences? Second, does any chapter repeat another? Ask the AI to check, then read the result yourself.
Here is my ebook outline: [paste outline].
1. For each chapter, say what it teaches in two sentences. Flag any chapter you cannot do this for.
2. List any two chapters that cover the same idea.
3. Tell me if the order works for a beginner, and what the reader still would not know at the end.
Do not add new facts. Only judge the outline.
Fix list: bad outline drafts and what to do
| If the AI outline has... | Do this |
|---|---|
| Chapters like "Introduction to the topic" | Rename each chapter by what the reader can do after it |
| Two chapters with the same point | Merge them, or give each a different job |
| Statistics or quotes you did not give it | Delete them. Only add a number you can prove |
| Fifteen chapters for a 20-page guide | Cut to the budget table above |
| No example in a chapter | Add one real story from your notes |
| A voice that is not yours | Paste two paragraphs you wrote and ask it to match your plain style |
When not to use AI for this:
Do not let AI write facts for a health, legal or money ebook. It may invent a statistic, a law or a quote, and it will sound sure. Use it for structure only, and check every fact yourself. This page is not legal, medical or financial advice. Also do not ask it to copy the structure or text of another author's book.
From outline to draft, one chapter at a time
Do not ask for the whole ebook at once. Take one chapter, paste its job and your matching notes, and ask for a rough draft. Then rewrite it in your own words and add your example. This keeps the facts yours. The same method helps with other pieces you write from notes.
When the text is ready, put it into a layout. Our guide to AI tools for presentation design covers slide-style pages, which work well for short ebooks. For a chart or a checklist page, see AI tools for infographic creation.
Finally, ask what the ebook is for. If it should bring readers to your business, plan how it fits with your other content in AI tools for small business content strategy.
