AI Tool to Write Product Descriptions for Etsy Listings
(Prompts)
Writing 30 product descriptions by hand is slow. Writing them with AI is fast, but the first draft usually sounds like every other shop. The fix is easy: give the AI real facts about your product, then edit the draft so it sounds like you.
Quick answer: Use a free chatbot. Paste your product facts (size, material, how it is made, who it is for), use the prompt below, and edit the result. Do not let AI invent materials, sizes or shipping times. Those must come from you.
What to give the AI first
The AI is only as good as your facts. Before you prompt, write down:
- What it is, and who it is for
- Material and size (exact numbers)
- How you make it (handmade, by hand, small batch)
- Colours or options
- Care instructions
- Shipping and processing time (your real times)
Copy-paste prompt: the description
Write an Etsy product description for this item.
Facts: [paste your facts: material, size, how it is made, colours, care].
Buyer: [who buys it and why, for example "a gift for a new mum"].
Structure: 1 short opening line, 4-5 bullet points of facts, 1 short paragraph about how it is made, care instructions.
Voice: warm and plain, like a maker talking to a customer. No hype words.
Use only the facts I gave. If something is missing, write [ADD] instead of guessing.
Copy-paste prompt: title and tags
Give me 5 Etsy listing title options for this item: [item and key facts].
Each under 120 characters. Put the most important words first (what it is, who it is for).
Then give 13 tag ideas, each under 20 characters, using words a buyer would really type.
Do not repeat the same word in every tag.
Always check Etsy's current rules for title length, tags and what you can claim. Etsy keeps guidance for sellers in its Seller Handbook.

6-point checklist before you publish
- Are size and material exact numbers, not guesses?
- Does the first line tell a buyer what it is?
- Is there one sentence only you could have written?
- Does it match your photos?
- Are shipping times your real times?
- Did you read it out loud once?
Real-world example: For a handmade leather journal I helped a client list, the AI initially drafted a generic "premium quality leather notebook." I edited it to read: "Hand-stitched with full-grain veg-tan leather that will develop a unique patina over years of use. Solid brass rivets, 120gsm acid-free paper." Adding those specific, tactile details transformed a bland AI draft into a listing that actually converted.
Where this fits
If you sell on more than Etsy, our guide to AI tools for ecommerce small business covers the wider setup, from photos to customer replies.
Mistakes to avoid
- Copy-pasting one description for every listing.
- Letting AI write "handmade with love" without saying how.
- Claiming things you can't prove (organic, safe for kids) without checking.
- Using all 13 tags with the same word.
