How to Check Student Loan Forgiveness Eligibility Online
(5 Steps, Updated for 2026)
“Am I eligible for forgiveness?” is a question with a boring, reliable answer path. You don’t need a mystery tool. You need four facts about your loans and your job, and a few official pages. AI helps you collect and sort the facts. It shouldn’t be the one to say yes.
How do you check student loan forgiveness eligibility online?
Log in to StudentAid.gov to see your loan types and payment counts, then use the PSLF Help Tool and employer search if you work in public service. Compare your situation to each program’s rules. Private loans don’t qualify for federal forgiveness at all.
Step 1: Find out if your loans are federal
Log in at StudentAid.gov and look at your loan list. Federal Direct loans appear there. Private loans don’t, and no federal forgiveness applies to them. Refinancing federal loans into a private one also ends your federal options permanently.
Step 2: Match yourself to a program
| Program | Core requirement | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) | 120 qualifying payments while working full time for a government or nonprofit employer, on Direct loans | PSLF Help Tool |
| IBR forgiveness | 20 or 25 years of qualifying payments, depending on when you first borrowed | Your StudentAid.gov dashboard |
| RAP forgiveness | 30 years of qualifying payments | Your StudentAid.gov dashboard |
| Perkins cancellation | Certain public-service jobs, over time | Your Perkins loan holder |
| Total and permanent disability, closed school, borrower defense | Specific circumstances; applications required | The forgiveness and cancellation page |
Step 3: Count your payments
The number that matters is your count of qualifying payments. Say Maya, a made-up teacher at a public school, has 48 qualifying PSLF payments. She needs 120, so 72 are left. If every month qualifies from now, the earliest forgiveness is six years out, around October 2032. That’s a date she can plan around. One missed certification could move it.
Step 4: Check the employer
For PSLF, eligibility follows your employer. Use the official PSLF employer search. A 2025 rule that would have let the government disqualify employers was vacated by courts on June 30, 2026, before it took effect, so the older definition still applies. It could be appealed, so check again at the time you apply. Certify your employment each year with the PSLF Help Tool, not once at the end.
Step 5: Check the plan and tax
PSLF payments count only on a qualifying plan. IBR and RAP both work for PSLF, but the new July 2026 rules limit your choices if you took out new loans or consolidated after that date. On tax, PSLF forgiveness has been federally tax-free, while balances forgiven under income-driven plans after 2025 may be taxed as income. Ask a tax professional about the year you expect forgiveness.
Use AI to build the checklist
I will give you facts about my situation. Do not decide whether I qualify.
Instead, list which forgiveness programs to check, what document or number I need for each, and where on StudentAid.gov to find it.
Facts: my loans are [Direct / FFEL / Perkins / private]. First borrowed in [year]. My employer is [type]. My payment count is [X]. Plan: [name].
If a fact is missing, ask me for it.
The instruction “do not decide whether I qualify” does real work. Without it a chatbot will often give you a confident yes or no that nobody can stand behind.
Red flags
Walk away from: anyone charging a fee to “apply” for forgiveness, sites that ask for your FSA ID but aren’t StudentAid.gov, and a promise that your balance “will” be erased. Forgiveness programs have rules, and only the Department of Education or your servicer can confirm a count. Court-ordered changes also happen, so check the forgiveness page for the latest.
Borrowing in India? Federal US forgiveness programs don’t apply to Indian education loans. Relief there depends on your bank and government scheme, so ask your bank in writing about restructuring or interest subsidy rules.

If you’re still deciding on a plan, compare options in our plan comparison guide. If you’re behind on payments, forgiveness won’t help yet, so read the struggling-borrower guide first. For tracking dates after you check, use the repayment planner. Public-service roles also show up in the graduate toolkit.
